Topped out — 50+ years — Raleigh, NC — plate to ridge.
S-03Position
The buildings are getting bigger. The wood is still wood. The crew matters.
FineLine frames turnkey — multifamily, commercial, glulam and heavy timber, exterior trim, and labor-only crews when that is what the job calls for. We self-perform, plate to ridge: our crews, our cranes, our riggers. No piecemeal subs, no handoffs, and safety as the highest priority on every deck.
S-03.1Framing Sequence
Plans to Built
A framing sequence in three illustrative frames, annotated like a drawing sheet: a roof truss flown by tower crane onto a five-over-one podium building; the framing deck inside the shell, with a two-by stud wall, floor joists on hangers and chalk-line layout on the subfloor; and a connection detail — a post base bracket bolted to an anchor in the slab beside a pressure-treated sill plate on its anchor bolt. The three frames are illustrative images, not photographs of a named project. Every callout is a typical, not a project figure. The dimension buttons on each frame report their member callouts.

Select a dimension target
Five-over-one podium: concrete transfer level, wood-framed levels above, a roof truss still on the hook.

Select a dimension target
Inside the shell: 2× stud wall, joists hung off the beam line, chalk-line layout snapped on the subfloor.

Select a dimension target
Where the load actually lands: a post base bolted to a slab anchor, next to the sill plate's anchor bolt.

From the plans up — every sheet, every stick, in-house.

S-05.1The Method
How we deliver
Processes and systems are the key to our track record — attention to detail from the first sheet to the last lift.
Drawing Scrub
Extensive drawing scrubbing before mobilization — we find the problems on paper, so they never cost you time on the deck.
Followed by a thorough RFI list, so once we start, we don't stop.
On-Site Management
Company-controlled crews under FineLine on-site management.
Prefabrication
Prefabricated wall components, built on- or off-site as the job demands.

Logistics
Logistical solutions for any site condition.
MEP Coordination
We work alongside MEP trade partners — the frame goes up coordinated, not corrected.
Envelope
Trained weather-barrier and window installers.
The goal on every job: deliver ahead of schedule at the highest quality.
Assurance
$3M general liability + workers' comp. Safety is the first line item, not the last.
Crews, cranes, riggers — ours. One standard from first plate to topped out.

S-07About
The Outfit
John “Buck” Smith founded FineLine Construction in Raleigh in 2008 — and kept the thing that makes a frame go up straight and on schedule: crews that answer to the company, not to a broker. Fifty-plus years of framing experience ride on those decks — now under tower cranes on podium multifamily jobs across the Triangle.
The name is the standard: on every set of drawings there is a fine line between planned and built. Holding it is the job. The original FineLine — the real fine line — is the one our crews walk every day, plate to ridge.
